Featured Exhibit: The Burning

The Burning Intro

Of all the fertile valleys in 19th century America, none was more important than the Shenandoah Valley. The rich farmlands yielded healthy crops and livestock to nurture the Confederate Army. The geography of the valley provided protection during the war years. In the fall of 1864, Union forces, under the command of General Ulysses S. Grant, were determined to destroy the Valley’s resources, cripple the Confederate cause, and bring the Civil War to an end.

This exhibit highlights the sorrowful and tragic events of those thirteen days in a format inspired by the headlines of the 19th century one-page broadside.
