Previous Exhibit: Valley Fraktur

Bernhart headerFraktur preview party

More than seventy documents full of bright colors, flowers, birds, whimsical creatures, funny plants and spontaneity are awaiting the viewer in this exhibition of fraktur artist Peter Bernhart of Rockingham County and his local colleagues. Hand-written papers decorated with pen, ink, and watercolor celebrate and preserve significant family events of the early German-Swiss settlers, such as birth and baptisms, marriage and house blessings, romance, or games. The display is composed of digital images of the original documents which are in private and public collections. Many have never before been displayed. See folk art at its finest. Be entertained by the motifs, the old German text, and genealogy. Learn of the hard work, religious conviction, and joys of the families who preserved the cultural heritage of the Valley in these decorative folk art designs which are valuable repositories of history.
